It is an indictment of the Tory government that there is hunger and food banks in Britain.
This is a wealthy country but with growing social divides of inequality.
I grew up in a much poorer country and my family was not rich. My father worked hard to provide for us. For Sunday lunch there would often be a roast chicken shared between six of us. But only half was ever shared then. Never more. We were often hungry but we always knew where the next meal would come from, e.g. on Mondays the other half of that roast chicken.
Here now in Britain, there are many similar hard-working parents who do not know where that next meal is coming from.
Working people are having to choose between heating and eating. Living costs are high. Benefits are complicated and not enough. Thus, there are Food Banks.
Many kind people and organisations donate to their local food banks. But it is an outrage that they should have to do so.
In the year 2000 there were no Food Banks in Britain. None.
Now there are more Food Banks than there are McDonalds.
Politics is about choices. Our government could legislate for truly decent wages. They could give all children free school meals – good, wholesome, hot food for all thereby helping to alleviate hunger, improving learning, and avoiding obesity and thus saving the NHS.
But they don’t
Is this the way to run a country or to run down a country?
I hunger for change!
