The NHS holds a profound place in my heart—it’s where the journey of life begins, where precious moments with loved ones are extended, and where hope is restored. From the joy of welcoming our children into the world at the Royal Surrey to the bittersweet moments spent with my mum as she fought cancer, the NHS has been our steadfast companion.
I come from a family deeply rooted in healthcare. My mum and sister were nurses, and my sister’s husband and their daughter are doctors. Their dedication to healing inspires me every day.
We once had a moment to honour the NHS workers who tirelessly dedicate themselves to others. With a simple gesture of clapping and banging pots and pans, we showed our gratitude. It felt like a turning point — a moment where we finally acknowledged the incredible sacrifices made by these everyday heroes.
But alas, the recognition was short-lived. Despite our collective applause, the neglect endured. It’s heartbreaking to witness record numbers of skilled healthcare professionals considering leaving their homeland for better opportunities abroad.
The exodus is staggering. The toll on morale is palpable. Nurses, once filled with passion for their profession, now find themselves disillusioned and disheartened.
In 2020/21, 2,680 nurses were issued with a certificate of current professional status (a CCPS – a prerequisite for taking the skills they have learnt in the NHS to work abroad in a country that appreciates them).
The following year it nearly doubled to 4,409. In 2022/23 it more than doubled to 10,282. And this year (2023/2024) it looks like it will double again with nearly 9,000 in the first six months.
I cannot overlook the past injustices inflicted upon the NHS, nor can I ignore the ongoing disregard for its dedicated workforce. Jeremy Hunt’s tenure as Health Secretary left scars that still ache, and the Conservative party’s continued neglect only deepens the wounds.
It’s time for change. It’s time to recognize the invaluable contributions of NHS workers and provide them with the support and respect they deserve. The future of our healthcare system—and the wellbeing of countless lives—depends on it.
