Jeremy Hunt – destroyer of the NHS

Jeremy Hunt seems to have never been a fan of the NHS.

The problems in the NHS are well documented. Waiting lists are upambulance targets are missedstaff are demoralised leaving like never beforecorridor care is becoming very common.

But these are all statistics – it’s the stories behind these that really tell of the state the Conservative Government has allowed the NHS to fall into.

Recently someone I know told me that their 94-year-old mother-in-law had been transferred to Royal Surrey Country Hospital. Because there were no beds she was left to die on a trolley in a corridor, accompanied by her 97-year-old husband and three children. A compassionate orderly spotted this and moved her into a small room – too small for her family to be with her. She spent her last hours alone.

Stories of people being left on a trolley in a hospital corridor are all too common.

And it’s not just patients that are suffering. Nurses and other NHS staff moral is at rock-bottom. There is a huge shortage of staff, in part because this year, 20,000 nurses are forecast to apply to take their qualification and work overseas. This is double last year, which in turn was double the year before.

After a decade of cuts in real-pay, last year, at the height of the cost-of-living crisis, Jeremy Hunt again denied nurses a pay-rise in line with inflation. He claimed it would create more inflation… Does anyone seriously believe that it is our nurses that caused inflation to jump over 10%? How insulting can he be?

And let’s not forget his record when he was Health Secretary. It’s difficult to know which facts to pick out from this article describing Hunt’s hospital legacy. Perhaps the most telling response from him though was in his acceptance speech when he was re-elected in 2017. His campaign was tested to the full by the campaign run by the NHS Action Pary candidate (Dr Louise Irvine) who patiently and honestly exposed Jeremy Hunt for who he really is. In his acceptance speech a clearly rattled Jeremy Hunt accused her of lying – her reply is well worth a read.

Jeremy hunt has done more to destroy the NHS and demoralise nurses than, perhaps, any other person. Let’s get him out!
